Skin Diary: Vampire Stomp

Howdy! Hope everyone is staying warm in this very cold weather :)

As I have mentioned in my intro last week, my first official post of 2014 is the start of another Skin Diary Series. I have decided to try another procedure to keep my skin acne-free & also to remove my acne scars.
Since I had great results with derma roller a couple of years ago, I chose another procedure that is almost similar in idea but is said to be much better in acne scar treatment.

This procedure is called Vampire Stomp or Autologous PRP Fractional Micro Needling. It's more commonly known as derma stamping but mine is only done in clinics as it uses a machine & my own blood plasma. I will try to take a picture of the machine next time since I can't find the exact brand that the derma clinic uses online.

1st step of the procedure, the nurse will apply topical anesthesia all over your face & put a cling wrap over it. This step lasts at least 30 minutes. And while waiting for anesthesia to work, the doctor or the nurse will get some blood from you, put it in a test tube & then to the machine to separate the clear plasma from the rest of the blood components. That part of the blood contains a lot of healing properties.

Since I am having a case of congested skin during the time I had the procedure, my skin was actually rough in texture as it has lots of bumps. I was given a cleaning prior to the actual procedure & an injection to my huge acne just to prep my skin.

The procedure itself is fast. It can be done by the doctor or the nurse. Mine only took a couple of minutes & it is painless in my opinion. Compared with my experience w/derma roller that you can still feel the pressure from the needles even with the anesthesia, you won't feel anything poking in your skin w/vampire stomp. It is also more even so the redness that my face had after the procedure was okay. I was able to go out of the clinic & commute because it faded fast. And since the needle stamp is quite small, it can cover lots of areas like around the mouth & nose a little better than w/the roller.

My face felt tight after the procedure was done because the plasma had already formed some crusting on my skin. Have you had a wound and then a yellowish clear liquid forms a crust to seal it? That's the same thing used all over my face. If you don't like that, I guess you can opt for the collagen serum instead (that's what I used during my derma rolling procedure) & it will give you the soft moisturized feel. I also did itch a little with the topical antibiotic that was applied after but that is normal for my sensitive skin.

This is done once a month so my next session will be the 1st week of February. The price is almost the same as w/the derma roller but once you decided to have a lot of session, it would be best to talk to Dra. Manuel so she can give it to you at discounted price. Right now, I am now doing it per session as I am still not sure until when I want to have this done since I think my skin will not need as many session as it used to because I don't have cystic acne breakouts anymore.

I haven't noticed any difference yet and I am still checking if I will continue to do the plasma or I will switch to the collagen serum, but the doctor suggested it would give better results if I used my own blood to heal my skin problems. And since I'm curious about he effectivity & differences I think I'm leaning towards using my own blood hehe.

If you have any specific questions that I haven't addressed here, do feel free to post it in the comment box below or just send me an email if that's easier for you. :)

Thank you for dropping by!

NOTE: I know I'll get asked this so I will put the clinic info here. Do call before you come so that you can talk to Dra Manuel.  :)

Review: Alba Botanica Natural Acnedote Invisible Treatment Gel

Hello everyone! Please stay dry because it's raining hard again and it's quite easy to get the flu.

Anyways, you might have noticed that I haven't been posting a lot of facial products these last few months and I wanted to tell you why. My skin is definitely rebelling right now because I have been breaking out for more than 2 months now. I can't seem to find out the culprit and I am trying to remove the products I use one by one to check if that's causing all these problems. I have also not been applying makeup except for undereye concealer and lipstick because I don't want to aggregate the condition of my skin. The only constant thing I apply on my skin are my basic skincare which are my cleanser, toner and treatment gel.

I have bought the Alba Botanica Natural Acnedote Invisible Treatment Gel at Healthy Options more than 2 months ago to try and test if it will work better than the oil control lotion I tried before from this line. I have read reviews that this is the main treatment from the line and that it works great so I went ahead and got it since it's really affordable at Php300+ only. And I'm really in need of a treatment fix for my skin. I have been using this 2x a day for 2 months now and here's my thoughts on this product.

*photo credit from the Alba Botanica website*

MY REVIEW

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THE PRODUCT:

- This is an all natural product and Salicylic Acid usually works for my skin.

- It did not cause any allergic reaction to my sensitive skin.

- Very affordable. Just around P300 and it will definitely last you months because you will only need a small amount at a time.

- It comes in a squeeze tube with a pointed tip so controlling the amount of product that will be dispensed is easy.

- No strong scent.

- Spreads easily and dries up fast and clear so it can be used just prior to makeup application.

- Cruelty free, vegan product.

- Available locally in all Healthy Options store.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

- Makes my skin dry up and therefore makes it oilier. Although this is a common effect of acne treatment so it's not a big deal for me. I just wanted to share it as a headsup.

- Doesn't do anything. My skin's condition looks and feels the same with or without this in my skin care routine.

- This will definitely not work for active acne because even my pimples can't be treated by this.

OVER-ALL RATING: 1/5

I think this is just a waste of money. It doesn't do anything because it did not treat my existing pimples and it doesn't prevent new ones from appearing.I'm giving up on this. I have been using this 2x a day for 2 months now because I want to give it time to work on me but I guess I need to look for another acne treatment soon before my skin gets worse. I am now starting to have cystic acne again so that's a bad sign.

Can you guys suggest anything? I am eyeing MyChelle products right now because I have been reading a lot of good stuff about them. But they are so expensive here in the Philippines and I am worried that they won't work for me again. If you have trusted acne products do share them with me. Thank you!

Review: ELF Clarifying Pressed Powder

Happy Thursday everyone! It's the last day of work for those working in the Philippines because it is a long weekend. Yay! Where will you go for vacation? Me, I'm going with my whole family to Tagaytay and the Land Cruiser Club of the Philippines. We are having our annual jamboree this weekend and I'm so excited to see all our friends. LCCP is composed of members that are Land Cruiser enthusiasts and my dad is one of the founders of the club. I am proud to be part of this club because it is family oriented and we always get to bond during family events like this :)

Today, I will review one product that I have been testing for a week now. I got it because I was curious and it's stated to contain salicylic acid so it's perfect for acne prone skin like mine.

ELF Clarifying pressed powder

SHADE I GOT: Ivory
NET WT.: 5g
PRICE: Php125 (so expensive compared to the US which is $1 = Php40 only)
INGREDIENTS:
Active: Salicylic Acid 1%

Ingredients : Talc, Mica, Kaolin, Paraffinum Liquidum (Mineral Oil), Titanium Dioxide, Cyclomethicone, Zinc Stearate, Petrolatum, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Fragrance (Aroma) May Contain: Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Red No.27 Lake (CI 45410), Red No.7 Lake (CI 15850), Yellow No.5 Lake (CI 19140), Blue No.1 Lake (CI 42090), Ultramarines (CI 77007)

MY REVIEW:

PROS:

- Controls oils for 4 hours thanks to the kaolin content. This is a great setting powder for oily skin girls.

- I like the size of it. It fits perfectly on my pocket or my small pouch. Perfect to bring during parties for retouch because it have a sponge.

- This gives a little coverage. Just enough to even your skin tone. I used this on top of my moisturizer and I can go out without worrying about looking greasy.

- Gives a matte but natural looking skin. Very light on the face too.

- This contains salicylic acid 1% as the active ingredient.

- ELF is a cruelty free brand :)

CONS

-  This broke me out! I don't know why when it is meant for acne-prone skin.  I tried it a couple of times and it always give me small bumps on the face at the end of the day.

- I believe I can get through this quite fast if I use it everyday and for retouch because after I used it 2x the embossed "elf logo" disappeared already.

- The hiked up price! It's ridiculously x3 compared to the price in the US. $1 = Php40 so even with the tax it should only cost less than a hundred. This product is sold for $3 here in Pinas :(

OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5

I will still be objective about it. Even though it broke me out, I was still happy with the performance while I was using it :)

Thanks for dropping by!

Review: Kojie San Kojic Acid Soap

Howdy! It's already November 8 today and I can't believe how fast the new year is coming. All we know, we'll just wake up and it's already 2013 :)

Today, I'll be doing a review on a product that I have been using on and off for a year now. On and off meaning... I'll buy a box, use it up, then move on to another product, then after a couple of months buy it again then the cycle continues hehe :)

KOJIE SAN Skin Lightening Soap (Kojic Acid)
I prefer buying the small one coz it lessen the hassle of cutting the big bar into pieces and this is more affordable for me. This Php50 box contains 2pcs 65g bar of Kojic Acid soap.

INGREDIENTS:

Each piece is individually wrapped to preserve the freshness.

I still cut them into 2 small pieces to prevent melting too much soap coz I only use this for my face anyway so a small chunk is enough to create a lather.I then store the cube inside my empty case of Shiseido Medicated Powder (it fits perfectly!).

PROS:

- I love that this doesn't melt as easily as other kojic acid soap.

- I love the fresh scent of orange.

- Being individually wrapped helped in prolonging the shelf life of the soap. Easy storage too.

- Cleanses my face well.

- This helps in drying out my pimples so I always buy this whenever I get breakouts.

- Regarding whitening, I am naturally fair already so I can't see any difference with this brand.
BUT kojic acid is guaranteed to make your skin look brighter because I have been using Kojic Acid soap since college and it really helped lighten my skin before. Just be patient with it :)

- Affordable. Only P50 for 130g worth of soap.

- Can easily bought in any supermarket and department store.

CONS:

- Can be drying like with all whitening products so moisturizer is a must

- There's no note where this is made but it is distributed by BEVI here in the Philippines. I just hope there's some sort of information about that.

OVER-ALL RATING: 5/5
I always repurchase this whenever I'm out of option or can't decide what facial wash I will buy next. It's like my go to facial wash hehe. I know I won't get any harsh reaction to this plus it's cheap. What more can you ask for, right? :)

Thanks for dropping by!

Review: Alba Botanica Natural Acne Dote Oil Control Lotion

Hello! First of all, I want to say keep safe to all of you who are gonna go on a trip this long weekend for the All Soul's Day. I might be going to Nueva Ecija (like always) tomorrow with my family because that's where our love ones are buried. SO yeah, I'm not sure if this is gonna be my last post or I will post again tonight for a Halloween makeup look. This will depend if I like the result of my makeup haha :)

Okay, now, let's go to the review!

BRAND: Alba Botanica
LINE: Natural Acne Dote
TYPE: Oil Control Lotion (Maximum Strength)

NET WT: 57g / 2oz
PRICE: Php359

 INGREDIENTS:

This comes in a white tube. I actually liked the packaging because you can easily control the amount of product you will dispense and also this is very hygienic :)

I got this last October 2 and I have been using this twice a day ever since :)

WHAT I LIKED ABOUT THIS:

- As I've said, I liked the hygienic packaging. I hate dipping my fingers in the product.

- This is an anti-acne, oil-free/mattifying and moisturizer in one. If I can save time by using only one product instead of 3, then I am happy.

- This contains 2% Salicylic Acid that is said to be naturally derived from Willow Bark Extract to combat acne. We all know that the less chemicals we use the better.

- It didn't aggravate my acne-prone skin. I also didn't experienced any itching or allergic reactions.

- This is a very light moisturizer and perfect for oily skin. This gives enough moisture for me coz anything heavier will cause my skin to over produce oil.

- It absorbs very quickly so you can apply makeup right after. I just need to wait for a minute or two and it will be totally absorbed :)

- Very easy to blend/spread on the skin  so you just need a pea size amount of product to be used all over the face and neck. I think this will last me months.

- This does not have unnecessary ingredients that causes irritations like:

- This is 100% vegetarian and cruelty free. It has a Leaping Bunny logo too to prove their cruelty free status.

WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE:

- Others might hate the medical scent of this moisturizer. It has a very strong salicylic acid smell.I don't mind coz I'm used to it already from the many years I've used SA to treat my skin.

-  This did not prevent any future breakouts nor treat the existing ones. I still get pimples on my forehead because I get oily there the most and I was hoping this would work in that area, but sadly, I still have bumps until now (1 month of use). I guess you will need an additional product for spot treatment to clear your skin.

- It is not good if you have very dry skin. The skin around my nose became drier with this moisturizer. I also can't use this on thin skin like around the eyes and mouth because it will sting.

- This does not mattify the skin as the label suggested. I still get so oily at the end of the day. The mattifying effect will only last for less than 4-5 hours and never long term.

OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5
I bought this for acne solutions but this disappointed me in that aspect. I then moved on to the mattifying claim, but that disappointed me too. Now, why am I giving this a 4 if I got disappointed? It's because this works great as an oil-free moisturizer that doesn't aggravate my skin. It is quite hard to find good moisturizers for acne prone oily skin so I am definitely happy in that regard. PLUS, this came from a brand that is natural and cruelty free which makes me happy.

WILL I REPURCHASE? Probably not in the near future. I am the type of person that loves trying new products so I will probably end up getting another one haha :)

Thanks for dropping by! Have a nice long weekend :)

Review: Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Toner

Howdy! I spent my Monday morning calling all the BENCH branches I can find on the net just so I can inquire if they still have tickets available for the Lee Min Ho fan meet next month...Guess what? They're sold out on the first day (October12)! So when we went yesterday, Upper Box B tickets were the only available ones. Me and my sis still got them but I am crossing my fingers that I can still find Patron Seats ticket or even Lower Box tickets soon :)

Anyway, let's go back to the purpose of this post. I am gonna review my current toner which is actually very famous all over the world -- Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel Pore Perfecting Toner (yellow label).

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

(front)

gently cleanses + conditions pores to maintain clear, smooth and balanced skin
100% natural formula

(back)
Pore Perfecting Power that's non-drying and perfectly gentle.
-Refines pores

-Soothes irritations
-Locks in moisture

INGREDIENTS:
All natural Witch Hazel, containing natural alcohol 14% and Witch Hazel extract

NET WT: 2 fl.oz / 59ml
PRICE: Php75

MY REVIEW:
I have finished 2 59ml-bottle of this toner and I have used it 2x a day for almost 2 months now so I think I can give my two cents now ^_^

PROS:

- Works great in removing left over residues (soap, dirt, makeup) that were not totally removed after washing my face.

- It is non-drying which is good.

- This sanitizes my skin using natural alcohol. I have acne prone skin so this is helpful in keeping the bacteria at bay.

- No irritations whatsoever.

- Affordable. This small bottle only costs Php75 and the big one costs Php250 (I think). There's 3 size available locally.

- Readily available in all Healthy Options store.

- This also comes in an astringent form (blue label).

- Cruelty free brand.

CONS:

- I use this up quite quickly because there's no stopper and you can accidentally spill the content.

OVER-ALL RATING: 4.5/5
If this have a better packaging, I will give this a perfect score.  It's just not meant for clumsy people like me hehe so I'll probably transfer it to a pump bottle or something :)

WILL I REPURCHASE? Definitely! I will get the biggest bottle once I've finished up my current bottle so I won't need to buy frequently.

Thanks for dropping by!

Review: LUSH Fresh Farmacy

Happy Tuesday!
Finally! I was able to take some pictures for my reviews using the DSLR of my sister...it was so hard to operate compared to my point&shoot digital camera. So please pardon me for the quality of the photos (until I get a new digicam or until I get the hang of this cam) hehe I really don't know what I'm doing ^_^

I have been using the LUSH Fresh Farmacy facial soap 2x a day for more than a month already. I have chosen to try this because it had garnered a lot of raves from acne prone skin people all over the world and also LUSH is part of the cruelty-free brands available locally.

Here's a close up look of the label so you can see the description of the product, ingredients and the price.

PRICE: P395 per 100g.
ACTIVE INGREDIENTS: Calamine and Chamomile

I had mine cut into smaller pieces (about 2-3 inches cube) at the store so that I can keep them fresh a lot longer and to prevent them from melting all at once. The SA at SM NORTH was so nice because she even wrapped them individually with paper :)

WHAT I LOVED ABOUT THE PRODUCT:

- It helped in calming my skin. My breakouts was also lessened -- I believed this because I don't have any acne treatment on my skin care regimen now.

- I liked the scent of calamine and chamomile. It makes me feel like I am putting some good quality natural stuff on my face which won't aggravate my skin condition haha ^_^

- This lathers really well. It's not bubbly/foamy like regular cleansers but at least it lathers enough for me to feel like I am cleaning my skin. I am not a fan of cleansers like Cetaphil because it doesn't lather at all.

- You can use everything up to the last melted soap to clean your face. I just scrape the container clean with my fingers :)

- Great for traveling. You won't need to worry about spilling anything on your bag because this is a solid soap.

- This product is 100% cruelty-free!

WHAT I HATE:

- It melts so fast! You really need to place this in a dry cool place because it melts quite easily. A small piece of soap can last me 2-3 weeks depending on how I store my used soap.

- This made my skin a lot drier. Now, I have oily skin and my face feels taut right after washing my face. I can't imagine people with dry skin using this.

- This is unhygienic. I prefer soaps in liquid form because I hate the idea of dipping my fingers and contaminating the rest of the product.

- I think it's a little pricey for some people especially if you're not used to buying higher end brands of skin care products.

OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5

It works great on oily, acne prone and sensitive skin. I just hope it doesn't melt that easily.

WOULD I REPURCHASE? Maybe. I am the type of person who likes trying new stuff so I'll probably buy something different once I used this up. I only have 2 more cubes and I'm done.

What's your favorite LUSH product? Do share them with me so I can check them out. I am definitely gonna try their other stuffs :)

Thank you for dropping by!

Review: Etude House Be Clear Moisturizer

Hello! I'm alive! I am so glad my health is almost back to normal. I am still coughing but at least I don't have fever, body malaise and asthma anymore. Thank you for patiently waiting ^_^

I will review another Etude House product today -- Etude House Be Clear Moisturizer. This is actually owned by my sister but I also uses it every morning since she got it last year (June 2011). I don't know why I haven't reviewed it yet but it's better late than never. This review might be of help to some of you :)

Be Clear Moisturizer SPF30/PA++ has the paper mulberry extract, which makes the skin clean and transparent, and the patented ingredient of whitening beauty expenses composite containing natural vitamins. It removes dead skin cells with dark tone and wastes effectively and supplies plentiful moisture. So, it is a double functional moisturize (whitening + sun protection) which makes the skin clean and fair.

Features:
-For Skin Whitening
-Moisturizing
-Sun Protection

PRICE: Php 578.00
I got this picture from the net. My bottle is so dirty already and the box is already gone so I decided to just grab a picture instead hehe ^_~

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION: The product comes in a white plastic pump bottle that is angular in shape. It consists of 120ml of product or 4.05 fl. oz. The moisturizer itself is white in color and the consistency is liquidy which makes it very easy to spread on the skin. It contains SPF 30 PA++ but it doesn't have a sunblock smell which is great.

According to the label in the bottle, this moisturizer acts as a whitening lotion too. It says it contains Brightening A Complex (Arnica, Pineapple, Kiwi and Lady's Mantle) which will give skin a brighter appearance.

PROS:

- Has a good amount of sun protection

- It's a good moisturizer for oily skin girls because it didn't made me too oily during the day.

- It has whitening properties that can help even out the skin tone. I haven't noticed any long term whitening but it does give a whitish cast on the skin once applied and blended. This made my skin look fresh and bright so I didn't mind that it's temporary. Here's how it looks like on me without flash and under natural lighting.

- Since it's liquid in form, you only need a pump to cover your whole face and neck.

- It is very easy to blend and get absorbed.

- This looks nice as a base under your powder coz the moisturizer already evened out your skin tone.

- It has a nice mild scent that I like. As I've said, it doesn't have a strong sunblock scent.

- I can apply a thin layer of this over my eye area and it doesn't irritate my eyes.

CONS:

- It doesn't look great on rough skin. I happened to have a akin asthma attack last year (around November) and my skin became rough on the touch. This product didn't looked good and it emphasized those rough spots :(

- Can easily be over applied and then it will look cakey. I haven't experienced a moisturizer looking cakey but this does.

OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5

I would give it a 5 but there are times that it works and times that it doesn't but whenever it works, I love it :)

What about you guys? What's your favorite day moisturizer? Please do share them here. I would love to try them out coz I'm in need of one. If it has sun protection, it would be better. Thank you in advance! ^_^

Review: Etude House Skin Malgam Toner in Smoother

Hello everyone! I am back with another skin care product review and this time it is a toner from Etude House. I have already used up half the bottle of this product and I apply it 2x a day since I got it last March 2012.

Etude House had launched a new line of hypoallergenic skin toners called Skin Malgam. Malgam is a Korean word that means cleanliness, clarity and purity. This toners are meant to promote clean, clear and pure complexion with moisturizing and pore cleansing formulas. (info found on the box of the product)

This line of toners have 6 variants that will fit normal, dry and oily skin. They also have a moisturizing serum for all skin types under this hypoallergenic line.
I got the variant for oily, acne prone skin which is called Smoother. Skin Malgam Smoother is an exfoliation toner that contains alcohol for disinfecting the skin...or so the speaker at the Etude House event last month said hehe ^_^

This bottle contains 250ml of product and it comes in an opaque plastic bottle.

You can click the picture to see the ingredients list but the first ingredient is water and the second is alcohol.

Also on the box, it is stated that this toner can be used 4 ways:

1. As a regular toner

2. As spot treatment - you just put some product in a piece of cotton pad and place that on the problematic area and wait for 30 mins.

3. As a refreshing spray.

4. As a mask to be used once a week.

Of course, I was talked into about getting the mask tray so I can try if this will work great as a mask.

You just need to get one piece and put it on the tray. Pour around 15ml of product on the sheet. You will see that it will expand quickly like so.

You will then spread the mask sheet soaked with the product and put it on your face like so.

WARNING: scary!
I suggest you avoid placing it around your eyes coz it might sting and dry the sensitive skin of your eyes. I got this based from experience.

Wait for 20 minutes before removing the mask. And here's the finish result.

I have not noticed any redness or irritation after the mask. I will discuss the effect on my review.

PROS:
- This is hypoallergenic.
- Cleanses very well. I really love toners that cleanses my skin thoroughly.
- Doesn't sting. Even though this contains alcohol, I have never experienced any stinging on my skin.
- The packaging is very nice. I love that it is not a brittle type of plastic and it doesn't spill if  bring it on trips.
- It helped in smoothing my skin. I have a lot of small bumps on my skin before I used this and it is now gone after 1 month of continuous use.
-  I believe it helps in controlling any breakouts because I did not get any acne or pimples even during my period.
- I love the fact that this line of toner can become essence mask too (the moisturizing variants)
- I love how my skin feels cleansed and refreshed after use.
- I like the scent too. Very very mild and fresh.
- Available on any Etude House store.

CONS:
- Can be a bit drying sometimes because of the alcohol content.
- Do not use the Smoother toner as a mask coz it is very drying especially around the eyes. My skin became wrinkled after I removed the mask sheet so I did not repeat it to test any effectiveness. I think it is better to use the moisturizing variant for mask use instead of this one.
- This is not suitable for someone with normal to dry skin. I have combination-oily skin and my cheeks became a drier with this. CHOOSE THE RIGHT VARIANT FOR YOUR SKIN TYPE.

OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5 - I love how this cleanses my face from dirt and oils that I accumulated throughout the day. It leaves my skin feeling fresh and primed for moisturizer.

WILL I REPURCHASE? I might try another variant to compare. I wanted the one for normal skin if it would work great on me too since I have combination-oily skin. But if I would not like it that much, I will repurchase this for night time use and the variant for normal skin during mornings :)

TIPS:
- Choose the best variant for your skin type.
- Don't forget to apply moisturizer after toning.
- Use just a small amount of product...just enough to wet a cotton pad and not soak it.

I am looking forward to getting the moisturizing serum under this line. I wanted to try it since I am oilier this summer and my current moisturizer is becoming too heavy for me now.

Thank you for dropping by! ^_^
