Gale Reads: Empower [Violet Eden Chapters # 5] by Jessica Shirvington

Finally! I'm done reading the last book in the Violet Eden Chapters. It really a sort of an achievement for me whenever I finish a series because that meant I have completed the story :)

I don't want to talk & rate this anymore. The original book cover (left) is just so boring and has no appeal whatsoever. I love the other version (right, red) way way better because it has more personality :)

I am so so glad that the author made the character of Violet Eden mature book after book. She turned from a whiny love crazed teenager with all those angst that is so immature for someone who has a big responsibility to a wonderful mature girl who knows what she is capable to do & what she must do. She is not totally ruled by her emotions anymore & can control her feelings & actions way better. I guess it's a nice touch for the author because it showed great character development not only for Violet but also to all the other character in the story because she's not the only one who matured. 

This finale is full of action & twists that it became a page turner, which is a little unexpected because I didn't have that much high hope with the series. I loved all the fight scenes that happened. And the ending is the best for each character. I just hoped she didn't have to kill the one that I liked since it's not essential to the story. Anyhow, I really admire each scene of this book and I am now adding this series on my to-buy list for physical copies :)

Perfect ending for a good series. If you love books about strong women then this is for you.

It is a good series, just not the best in the YA genre that I have read. It started slow in the first 3 books but started to pick up in book 4 & 5. I did love the concept about Gregoris & Nephilims & Angels but the premise & everything is not unique. I would have loved to see more depth to the story. But this is still a good series to read especially if you love books about angels.

Gale Reads: Chosen at Nightfall by CC Hunter (Shadow Falls Series #5)

Happy Tuesday! It's been raining again these last few days and I think a typhoon will come again soon. Since I can't go out, I stayed at home and read a book from my To-Read List.

The last installment for the Shadow Falls Series by CC Hunter has already been released last April 2013. I have reviewed the first 4 books so you can read those first if you're new to the story :)

Book 1-3

Book 4

Chosen At Nightfall is the end about the story of Kylie Galen, a chameleon teenager who had struggled in learning who she really is. Kylie thought she was just a normal teenager dealing with a broken family and psychiatric problems (she sees ghosts) until she got enrolled at Shadow Falls Academy and learned about her supernatural capabilities. After accepting the fact that she is a supernatural being, she then struggled in finding out which specie she belongs to because her brain pattern is very unique and it changes frequently. Book 4, Whispers at Moonrise, solved her identity question and it ended with a big question mark about her decision to stay with her clan and also who she really wants between Derek and Lucas.

My thoughts:
I loved Chosen At Nightfall! It's the perfect ending for this series because it solved all the conflicts of Kylie and had a happy ending. CC Hunter proved true that she can really write Young Adult stories that involves different kinds of love and relationships while still incorporating lessons for teenagers. She was also able to insert the importance of self preservation and safe sex throughout the series. I didn't like her initial approach of "sex is bad and gross" because I thought it's over the top, but after reading book 5, I get to understand that she wants to show a more realistic view about the topic. She wants her readers to see how Kylie and the gang developed and mature not only physically but also on their beliefs and actions. For me, the way CC Hunter ended the story is commendable because she created a balance between the different species and also between family and friends. She also showed how teens can become independent and decide for their own while still respecting their family especially their parents. 

RATING: 4.5/5

Chosen At Nightfall is a great final installment for a good series. I have seen a lot of series that ended badly but CC Hunter were able to keep the quality until the last book which made me really happy and content. I gave this 4.5/5 rating because the author could have made this story a little longer or more detailed. The last 1/3 of the story felt a little rushed and she could have placed some more details and importance about the problem solving process instead of just saying this is what we did and this is the result, everyone is happy. But aside from that, I am glad it does have a happy ending for everyone :)



OVER-ALL RATING FOR THE SHADOW FALLS SERIES: 5/5

I am so in love with this series! It has a fresh approach wherein the author incorporated the popular groups of supernaturals and created a boarding school for them to interact with each other like in Xmen. If you love paranormal stories, you will definitely love this because it have vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, faeries, witches and warlocks, and even chameleons who have a little of everything, all in one story. This also have a lot of lessons that will benefit teenagers because a lot of the conflicts involved were the problems encountered by teens like divorce/infidelity, long distance relationship between friends and family, unsupportive parents, breakups, jealousy, friendship, being the odd man/unique in class, and dealing with authority figures like teachers and family. I recommend this to anyone and I believe even kids can read it as it doesn't have romance involved so parents can relax.

FYI: According to CC Hunter, she will start a spinoff series where the vampire friend of Kylie, Della Tsang, would be the main character! I will definitely read that because I would still be able to see the rest of the gang even if they are just glimpses. Also Della is really fun and seeing the Shadow Falls Academy through her eyes would be amazing!

Gale Reads: The Indigo Spell [Bloodlines 3] by Richelle Mead

Happy Monday everyone! It's EDSA Day today so I hope no one will get stuck in traffic due to the different events that's gonna happen the whole day :)

I just finished reading the 3rd installment of Richelle Mead's Bloodline Series: The Indigo Spell. I really really love Mead's YA books and I am looking forward to trying her romance books yet because they will probably have darker stories. Anyway, back to Bloodlines, I have been waiting for the release of this book since last year and I am happy to learn that book 4 will be out on November 2013! Yay! No more waiting for a year for the next one hehe :)

COVER TALK:
I am not that fond of the cover. No offense meant but I hope they just made the cover a lot more mysterious like the Shadow Falls Series or just use a logo like the Hunger Games instead of putting models coz in my imagination, Sydney and Adrian looks different than these models :(

I love the colors and tone though :)

NOTE: First off, I can't believe I haven't reviewed the first 2 books yet in this series. I'm sorry for the lapse, I will rectify that soon. I am planning on re-reading the 3 books continuously once I have time so I can give a more in-depth review. It's been a long time since I've read the first 2 books so I actually forgot the details so, yeah. Please wait for a followup :)


MY REVIEW:


I am so glad I am not disappointed with this installment. Adrian is back as him with all his quirky wits and his all-out-for-love character. And it is very nice to know that he is trying his best to improve his status and personality. I also enjoyed the change in Sydney because she is becoming more and more intriguing and you get this urge to read more so you can see her progression from being a cold and perfectionist Alchemist to a more normal girl that thinks about feelings first before following the rules blindly. The twist and turns in the story is also well done and I enjoyed being surprised by these events when the time came that they were revealed.
I can't say much about this book since this is a series and the story flows from one book until the next one so I can only judge the way it was written and I am satisfied with it. Although there are some parts that Richelle Mead mixed up the character's name but I didn't mind since it only happened around twice? Oh and I sometimes can get lost in my own thought while reading coz there are some scenes that are dragging and repetitive in my opinion. I'm just glad the author were able to rectify it in the latter part of the book and everything went back to being a page turner.


OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5

 This installment opened so many possibilities for the future and I can't wait to read more. Mead made sure that you are left with a clean cliff hanger that closed the current issue but opened it for the next one. I'm guessing this series will be 6 books as well like with Vampire Academy so I still have 3 more (hopefully).

Gale Reads: Divergent by Veronica Roth

Happy Monday! 

I have finished a book this weekend! Divergent by Veronica Roth has been with me since last year but I can't seem to start reading it even though there were a lot of people saying this is a good book. Luckily, I got some inspirations last Friday and read this overnight. 

TITLE: Divergent

SYNOPSIS:
In the pre-apocalypse world, the society got divided into 5 factions to maintain order and prevent war from happening. Each faction lives in which core value they believe is needed to have peace...example, the abnegation believes that selfishness is the reason for trouble so they live by becoming selfless.

Once you reached 16, you will need to decide which faction you want to belong to for the rest of your life. Will you stay with your family and continue with the beliefs you grew up in or will you leave them and join another? That is the question that troubles Beatrice Prior's mind because this year is her 16th birthday and she needs to decide for her future.

COVER TALK:
I love the cover! It is actually almost the symbol for the faction Dauntless which is fire. I really liked the color combination and the artistic feel it gives. I'm glad the publisher decided to go with symbolic pictures as covers compared to the usual that uses models.

MY THOUGHTS:

I want to start by saying, this book is awesome! I really enjoyed reading it and there are no dull moments. All the scenes are entertaining to read and I know that each of them is necessary in the story--no fillers just to make the book longer. They were actually essential to the development of the characters and the progress of the story. And the world building is really good because I can imagine everything clearly as if I was there living with them.

I also loved all the characters in the book because each one of them have a certain role to fulfill to make the story complete. I even liked the way the villains were portrayed. You can also see them mature after every event which is definitely a good thing because it wouldn't be believable if they stayed as naive 16 year olds after all the things they went through.

I want to give another point on how Roth created the love story. It was not rushed like the other YA books around wherein the female fell hopelessly in love with a handsome young man as soon as she saw him. I'm not really into the "love at first sight" books that much anymore and I now prefer stories where the 2 will grow affection with each other as time passes by because that's more realistic and believable. That is why I loved the fact that even though I know she will fall for him in the end and they will become a couple, I still enjoyed reading on how their feelings developed for each other. (*I almost slipped and gave a spoiler haha)

The only thing that I didn't quite get is the fact that there were no adults present in the Dauntless compound which is unbelievable. Everyone is below 20 years old, which I'm not sure if there's a story behind that and will be known in the next book or if it's really not part of the story. So I will get back to you about that once I've picked up the next installment which is Insurgent.

So yeah, those are my thought on the book Divergent. This is really popular just like the Hunger Games (which I still haven't read yet) and I can't believe I have just read it now especially because the last part of the trilogy is gonna come out this year already. Anyway, better late than never, right? Oh, and there's already a movie on the works which I am excited to see. I hope it comes out this year too :)

Super love this book. It is very entertaining and a real page turner. Veronica Roth is a good writer and I can't believe this is her first book because the way she writes is way better than other authors that I have read. I can't wait to read Insurgent to know what happens to Tris and the gang :)

Gale Reads: The Lost Prince [Iron Fey: The Call of the Forgotten #1] by Julie Kagawa

Happy Friday everyone! I hope you all would have a great weekend ahead..Me? I'll probably be with the bf tomorrow to celebrate his birthday :)

So, remember the Iron Fey Series by Julie Kagawa that I reviewed months ago? No? Hmm You can read it here. Anyway, I loved that series! Even though it is for teens (young adult genre about fairies), I really got hooked in it because Kagawa's writing technique is superb. I love her way of describing the world of the fairies (Nevernever) and since it is the first fairy book I've read as an adult, it actually placed the bar up high. I can't seem to like the less detailed works of other authors coz I tend to compare it with this series. So imagine my excitement when I've learned that Kagawa started a spin-off of this series-- The Call of the Forgotten. And this time, the main character is Ethan Chase, the little brother of Megan (the Iron Queen and the lead character in the Iron Fey Series) who had experienced a lot of problems with the fey since he was little. I grabbed an ebook copy as soon as it got released in the US because I can't wait for the paperback copy to reach Manila hehe :)

TITLE: The Lost Prince

SERIES: The Iron Fey Series #1

COVER TALK:
I am not a fan of the cover. I liked that it is blue and the detailing is beautiful, but as I've mentioned before, I don't like books that have real people on the covers.

MY REVIEW:
I'll start with the good stuff! I loved the fact that I could still read about Megan, Ash, Puck and the other fey like Grimalkin, etc and get some updates on how they lived after the fourth book ended. I liked knowing snippets of information about them and I'm happy that through this spin-off they will still be part of the story even though they are not in focus anymore. 

I also liked the fact that this new Iron Fey series will star a male character. I believe it is a breath of fresh air to read it in a male point of view instead of a girl like almost every other YA book out there. 

The mere mention of Filipino traditions and cultures in this book made me smile a lot. The terms, "guro" and "manghuhula" is fun to read every time it arises. The use of arnis in fighting of evil is funny too haha :)

BUT after reading the story, I actually got a little disappointed. I can't seem to relate with Ethan and I hated his personality, to be exact. I got the point why he chose to act like that but it irritated me a lot because even though everything was already revealed, he still decided to act like a jerk. It is really pointless, in my opinion. The flow of the story is repetitive too especially in the first 2/3 of the story in a sense that the happenings between the two main characters (Ethan and Kenzie) seemed like a cycle of violence -- fighting, guilty feelings, honeymoon then repeat again.

Also, I don't know what happened but it seems like this book is written by a different author. The exciting world building, the adventures and the magical fey got lost in this one. The way it is written is in the view of Ethan and since he doesn't like the Nevernever and the fey, all the self talking he did all throughout the story rubbed off me. I started disliking the fairies too and it got a little hard to finish this one. I hope book 2 will be better since the first one of a series is usually full of preparations for the next books.


OVER-ALL RATING: 3/5


I love the series but this spin-off is a let down. It drags a little and got boring compared to the first 4 books. I will still read the next book just because I want to know how the prophecy will come about.


WILL I RECOMMEND THIS? 
I will recommend this to the fans of the Iron Fey series. I don't think it will appeal to other readers aside form the fans, to be honest.

Gale Reads: Whisphers at Moonrise (Shadow Falls #4) by C.C. Hunter

Finally! I was able to get my hands on a copy of Whispers At Moonrise-- the fourth book in the Shadow Falls Series by C.C. Hunter. 

I have waited a long time for this book because the cliff hanger in Book 3 was so bad haha. If you want to read my book review on the first 3 books in the series, click here.

COVER TALK:
The cover is still good but I liked the first ones better. This cover shows Kylie inside the gates of the cemetery and it signifies a lot about the troubles Kylie is experiencing at her life. The colors and tones of the book cover is so dark and mysterious that it reflects her feelings perfectly.

On the side note, I believe this series will consist of 5 books and the conclusion will be Chosen At Nightfall  that will go out next year April 2013. So long... Well at least there's already a book cover for it and it's gorgeous! :)

MY REVIEW:
I am in love with this series! C.C. Hunter is a really great story teller. The smooth flow of her stories from one book to the next in this series is awesome. I liked that this series feels like it's one whole book just divided into 5 and the ending of each feels like it's just a chapter ending. I can't believe I'll get so frustrated in waiting for this 4th installment because the cliffhanger of book 3, Taken at Dusk, that I've read last July is kinda out there and it really made me reach for the next one haha. Luckily, this series comes out every 6 months and not once a year like the others, if not, I don't know how I will handle the suspense of waiting to know what happens next in Kylie Galen's life and Shadow Falls Camp :)

Whispers at Moonrise is a little different from the previous 3 because this one feels like it is complete even though I know there is another one coming. Complete, meaning, all the raised conflicts from all 4 are handled already except for the 2 which will be talked about in the last installment, Chosen at Nightfall. This did not end with an irritating cliff hanger so I am quite happy although I still can't wait for April to come so I can read the next one.

There's a lot of surprising revelations in this book and it answered a lot of questions. It also has a lot of twists especially in the love triangle department between Kylie, Lucas and Derek. Personally, I'm a Lucas Team just because theirs is a long term love affair wherein they have known each other since they were kids and they both are in love...and they have a lot of conflicts too. Derek is a good match too but I guess he will be the boring choice and I think they are better of as friends who understand each other a lot. I would hate to see Kylie and Derek ending up as a couple because I believe their good relationship will change once that happens.

I also enjoyed reading about Kylie's friends who have found their partners already and are really happy. Socks is also happy now because of what Kylie did accidentally. I always enjoy the girl bonding scenes because their thoughts and dialogues really reflected how teenagers think. I really salute C.C. Hunter for making everything realistic.

[Spoiler alert]

The conflicts I'm talking about are 1) Who will Kylie choose between Derek and Lucas once she gets back, 2) Will she be able to master her traits as a Chameleon so she can go back to Shadow Falls and lastly 3) What will the FRU do next to get Kylie. 

I'm also curious how she will adapt in her new world full of people like her and also how her relationship with her grandfather will develop. I really believe it would be really interesting to know how she will try to learn everything as fast as she could just so she can go back to her friends and family at Shadow Falls.

Book 5 will definitely be an interesting read and I'm hoping it would be a a great conclusion to the series.


OVER-ALL RATING: 5/5

I love this book! Everything is detailed and there's no hanging conflicts that can give problems to the next book. I really can't find any fault with this one. Definitely a good read.

Howdy! I already started reading the books I got from the last book fair at SMX last month and I finished one this morning so I wanted to do a book review before I forget any details :)

COVER TALK:
I am loving the book cover. I have it in the US version (because my book came from the US library) and I prefer it than the UK release. I liked that it doesn't show the face of the girl but it showed her holding a glass sphere. I really love it whenever cover designers make them mysterious with pretty colors. I am not saying the UK version is bad but I liked the simplicity of the US one with a girl and the red background :)


MY REVIEW:
I got this because I got intrigued by the synopsis at the back. I really liked action packed and fantasy fueled stories especially if the main character is the one fighting the battles. You might have noticed that I am in love with Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels Series and also Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy Series just basing it on my previous Gale Reads posts. I am really attracted to those strong willed women fighters because I hated puny whiny ones the most. I thought this one would be like those two and so I decided to get this and for a bargain too (only Php99 for a hard bound).

Let's start with the things I liked about this book. This book has a very unique take on demons in general and I liked how the author described these creatures very well. It actually matched my idea of what they look like if I see one--strong, scary and mischievous. I think Ilona Andrews influenced Jana Oliver because you can definitely see glimpses of the world Andrews created for Kate Daniels -- a ruined Atlanta where necromancers roamed and magic prevails.

I think this is a good first book for the series because it introduced smoothly all the main characters that will play a big part on the whole series. They introduced Riley, Beck, Simon, the Guild of Demon Trappers, Ori, Peter and the Vatican guys. They also introduced the conflict going on and the power struggles between good and evil, Angels vs Demons,  hunters vs trappers, boys vs girls.

This also reminded me of the Violet Eden Chapters by Jessica Shirvington because the lead character Riley resembles Violet in personality so I believe Riley will still develop throughout the rest of the series and won't stay immature like in this first book (hopefully). There's also a love square involved so I'm not sure what would happen next :)

Now, let's go to the things I didn't like about the book. 
1 - I hated the way Beck talks. I know he is supposed to be a Southener but please I can't take the "yer" instead of "your" and "ya" instead of "you". Just make it in grammatically correct sentences please. It throws me off whenever I see his statements.

2- There's also a couple of errors all throughout the story. I hoped the proof reader did a good job next time since it kinda distract me to see a "him" when it's supposed to be a "her". But I'm glad there's no major grammatical error and I liked her world building.

3- There are parts that I think are boring or too slow. It took me 2-3 days to finish this book coz it's not really a page turner.

4- There's no romance/love story building among Riley and the 3 guys. I can't feel the spark and I already know who she'll end up with just by making the story be shown in the perspective of Riley and Beck. So I don't know why the author decided to make it a love square.

5. I also didn't like the conflicts in the information: Riley has no money to make ends meet but she has a car even thought the gas price is high, she buys Holy Water that sells $12 a pint, and she can indulge herself to buy hot chocolate and pants. 

6. I'm not liking the idea of sippy cups being used as a container for demons or that Holy Water is the main tool to fight them. Or you use Moby Dick to capture a demon just because it's boring.

OVER-ALL RATING: 3/5

I am not yet sure if I liked this series or not. There are a lot of books now a days in this genre and there are better ones but there's something about the unique concept of demons and sippy cups and angels to attract me to it. I will definitely get the 2nd book just so I can see if the story will progress nicely. Hopefully it does or this series will end up being on my "unfinished list".

WHO WILL YOU RECOMMEND THIS TO?
I will definitely recommend this to teenagers who like to read about urban fantasy and love stories. Those who have enjoyed the likes of Violet Eden Chapters, Kate Daniels and Twilight will enjoy this book.

COVER TALK: 
As I've said in my previous cover talk, I am not fond of the covers on this series. The first book, Embrace, is beautiful, but the rest are not. They didn't left any impression on me at all because they look so boring. Lucky me, I read them through ebook or else I wouldn't even give these books a second glance in the bookstore and I won't be able to read it hehe.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is the final installment of the series unless the author decided to make this a 5 or 6 books saga...because I felt like it could have one more book to make it complete. Book 4 ended in a way of a cliffhanger, in some sense so I am actually hoping it will have a continuation or else I will be so disappointed. 

It definitely had answered all the questions that were raised since the first book, the author were able to wrap every conflict nicely...but it didn't have a good ending for the main characters. I felt it lacks something when I finished reading the last sentence in the book. It really made me feel like I need to pickup the next one to know what will happen next.


Endless is so much better compared to the first 3. My irritation with Violet were actually eased because in this installment, her immaturity vanished completely. She is still obsessed with her "soul mate" status with Lincoln but I understand it better now. She doesn't have a choice but to feel that way because her very soul is reaching for it and her will power can only endure so much since she is still young and have very strong senses.

I also loved the fact that Violet and Phoenix were able to talk everything out and sort their feelings for each other. He was also able to elevate his status which is a great ending for him in some way. I just wish he can forget his love for Violet so that he won't hurt anymore.

Also, I really hated the fact that Violet needed to go away and leave Lincoln after she brought him back. I don't get it why after all the trials they endured together, they won't be able to stay as a couple. They love each other so much but they always get hurt because of it. I really hope this is not a tragedy like Romeo and Juliet coz I hate those kinds of stories. And hopefully, this will still have a book 5 at least to finish Violet's story.



OVER-ALL RATING: 4/5

It is a good book for the series but I don't think it should be the final installment. The story of Violet Eden needed a lot more telling, IMO :)
