PETA: A Killing Machine

I can't believe I will be writing something like this about a group that I am actually following because they are advocating animal rights and going cruelty-free. PETA is a very famous organization supported by a lot of celebrities and politicians who love animals. They do fund raising and rescues and lots of promotions about animal rights so I can't get it why they would not care about their rescued animals?

Seriously, it is really so hypocritical of them to promote animal rights when they themselves kill so many healthy rescued dogs and cats that can be groomed for adoption and given new chances. They only keep all the donations that animal lovers give to the organization for their own pockets. I wonder why the US government can't do nothing about this when there are so many proofs about their cruelty. The US does have laws against animal cruelty right? I pray they can stop all these unnecessary killings soon :(

How To: Rear un-weaned kittens~

Happy Monday everyone! I know my schedule to post is supposed to be Tues-Thurs-Sat, but it doesn't mean I can't post anytime of the week if I wanted to, right? I want to believe that a lot of you would love to see me blog more than 3x a week *crossing my fingers for it to be true* LOL ^_^

WARNING: This is a very long post since I gave a lot of details

Anyways, I got the inspiration last week about posting my experience in rearing my rescued kittens when I read about Pammy's post regarding her own rescued kitten - Furball. She had done everything she can in taking care of Furball, it's just unfortunate that she didn't make it. I knew that Pammy was really saddened about it and I know the feeling since I have experienced those too. 

I started rescuing kittens last year because I already have the means to stand up to my parents that I can't let those babies just die without fighting to live. It's just sad that I kept on losing my rescued kittens because of my ignorance at that time and so when I got these 3 kittens that I have now, I immediately called PAWS to ask for assistance because the ones I got now was way younger than my previous rescues and I was so afraid I'll lose them too.

So, I said to myself, "There are a lot of people who rescues abandoned kittens and have the heart and patience in taking care of them but not all have the means to get professional advises from veterinarians on how to take care of these small angels. And if these good Samaritans don't know how to properly care for these newborns, their naturally low survival chance will become lower and they'll just die." 

So with that thought, I would love to share all of my personal experiences and the advises that both the vets and the staff at PAWS gave me these last 2 months on how we can up the survival of our rescued babies. I hope this post can be of great help to all of you in the future when you do get a chance to rescue.

RULE#1 - ALWAYS KEEP THEM WARM and DRY.

It is best to keep unweaned kittens with other kittens so they can share body heat and they won't feel lonely because cats usually give birth to at least 3 kittens at a time so it's normal for them to be with siblings.

I placed my kittens inside a dog carrier (a picnic basket with lid is also a good substitute) so that they have enough air to breath but they are still protected from the cold and other animals. I also placed a clean old rag inside so they can snuggle up there and the cloth can absorb their pee.

Also, the best way to keep them warm is to put a hot bottle covered with cloth inside their sleeping area. Make sure that the bottle is closed tightly and the cloth is thick enough so that your kittens won't get burned. I used my old Lock n' Lock drinking bottle that can withstand hot water and covered it with a thick worn-out socks. It worked great! The kittens really snuggle up to the bottle whenever they feel cold.

*since Garfield is bigger now, I put his basket inside a dog cage so he can still play around*

RULE # 2 - BUY A FEEDING BOTTLE MEANT FOR NEWBORN KITTENS (and wash it after every use)

Kittens needed a feeding bottle with small long nipple. The nipple should reach their throat in order for them to suck properly. The regular infant bottle is too large for their small mouths and using a dropper and syringe is a little dangerous coz they can drown in the milk.

2 of the 3 kittens I got were literally newborns, maybe 3 days old, because they still have umbilical cords and their eyes were still closed. The only male of the trio is a little bigger (maybe 3-4 weeks older) because he can already stand and move around although he still can't see. So, feeding the two little girls was really a challenge because they tend to drown quite easily so I need to carefully feed them everytime. Also, the younger they are, the more frequent they want to feed. Now that Garfield is almost 3 months old, he can have around 4 hours of interval between feeding.
 

RULE # 3 - FEED THEM WITH MILK MEANT FOR KITTENS/PUPPIES OR AN INFANT MILK WITH LOW LACTOSE CONTENT

I know that not all of us can afford milk replacement for puppies/kittens because it is quite expensive and it gets bad quite fast -- this is my case-- so the next best thing we can give them is an infant formula that is lactose free because dogs and cats don't have enough lactase (the one that breaks down lactose found in milk) so giving them regular milk can give them diarrhea and they will die of dehydration.

I buy the one made by Nestle because it is cheaper than NAN (this costs P400+ per small can). Nestogen Low Lactose only have one size (340g) and it only costs Php169.75 in Mercury Drug. I put 1 scoop for every 2oz of water (1:2 ratio). Lactose free milk gets spoiled quite easily compared to the regular ones so I just make 1oz of milk everytime and just make another batch when it's done.  According to the vet, we can never over feed them so it is safe to continuously give them milk whenever they want it...it is usually every 2 hours in my experience :)

I felt like I'm a mom breastfeeding her newborn hehe*

JUST REMEMBER, although we are giving them milk, we can never replace the quality of their moms milk. Two out of three of the kittens I rescued died after a month because they got sick. According to the vet, we can't do anything about it because they got the infection from their mom at birth and since they don't have their mom to give them the boost in immune system through her milk, they can't fight it off. Garfield only survived because he came from a different mother who probably were able to drink colostrum at birth and he is a couple of weeks older than the two so he is a lot stronger.


RULE#4 - START GIVING THEM MASHED KITTEN FOOD WHEN YOU ALREADY HAVE A GO SIGNAL FROM THE VETERINARIAN, not before.

This is my mistake last year. The kittens I got before already have teeth and I thought I can already feed them with food instead of milk...WRONG! They died because they were unable to digest the sardines I gave them..It was so sad because when I was only giving them milk, they were so healthy :(

SO, I got really scared of that. Even though one of the 3 kittens started to get teeth, I really stretched the time and waited for the go signal from the vet. According to him, kittens around 2-3 months old can tolerate food as long as it is meant for kittens and it is mashed up. Also, we should never stop giving them milk because that's still their main source of fluids. 

Garfield started eating solid food around Christmas time because we got a go signal last December 18. He was able to tolerate it and he really loves eating Whiskas Junior (Php23 at Landmark grocery). I give him 1 tablespoon every 4 or 6 hours and milk in between because I want him to drink fluids regularly.

TIP: Try using a small feeding plate (I used the one for sauces..yung pang sawsawan na platito) so that they can't put their feet inside the food. They still are messy so lessening the size can help in decreasing the mess.

RULE # 5 - YOU NEED TO STIMULATE THEIR GENITALS TO MAKE THEM PEE/POOP

This is the case if you have really young kittens. It is the job of their mom to lick their genitals after every feeding so they can eliminate properly. But since they don't have a mom anymore, and you are the substitute mom until they get a little older and can do it themselves, it's now your responsibility. You can use wet cloth or moist cotton balls to gently wipe their genitals after every feeding. Don't forget to dry them after too coz they can get cold and bacteria loves moist places.

I have used up quite a lot of cotton balls but I prefer it compared to using cloth coz it's more sanitary (I'm kinda OCD haha). It is easier for me to throw dirty cottons than frequently wash cloths haha. Don't worry, their pee and poop doesn't smell bad since they were only drinking milk. You'll get a problem with the smell when you start giving them solids. 


RULE # 6 - BRING THEM AT PAWS AND APPLY FOR FOSTER CARE

PAWS is already full at the moment (they have more than 300 cats there at present) so they won't be able to accept your rescued kittens but they can offer you FREE veterinary services and can lend you stuffs for taking care of your ward. They will also help you find someone to adopt them when they get older if you don't want to keep them.

I also applied for foster care since I don't have a choice but it turned out it's for the better. My kittens got free deworming and vaccines, regular check ups by the vet, grooming and spay/neuter when they become 6 months old. You won't need to worry about vet bills anymore and they will really give you assistance in taking care of them.

I talked to PAWS and told them I made a promise with Garfield that if he survives to adulthood, I will be the one to adopt him because I love him already. He still have one month to go before he passes the critical period but I am very positive he will survive :)


RULE # 7 - BRING THEM TO A VETERINARIAN AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Get them checked so that if ever they have any problems, the doctor can treat them. They can also give you advices and probability about your kitten's survival. When I first bought the 3 kittens I rescued, the vet already informed me that the chance of surviving is very low and we could only do our best to take care of them and it's still up to the kittens if they can fight off whatever they got from their mom.


RULE # 8 - DON'T FORGET TO HAVE THEM SPAYED/NEUTERED 

6 months is the time when cats started ovulating and looking for partners. It is best to get them spayed/neutered at this time so you can stop unwanted pregnancy to happen. This way, we won't add to the ever increasing population of cats (and even dogs) on the streets that only gets killed by cars or abused by inhuman people.

It is very simple: NO unwanted pregnancy = NO abandoned kittens

Those are the rules/tips I've learned from the veterinarians and the staff at PAWS that I talked with these last 2 months. So far so good and I have faith Garfield will push through. I hope when the time comes and you found abandoned kittens on the sidewalk, you won't hesitate to pick them up and take them home because now you have the basic knowledge on how to care for them. Personal: November update ~ Daily Blog?

Hello everyone! I think it's been almost 2 weeks since my last post and here's what I have been busy with :)

I'll start with my birthday...the previous days before that was spent at work so it's nothing fun haha 

1. My 27th birthday (NOVEMBER 15)

I can't believe I'm already 27. I still feel like I'm on my early 20s haha maybe my mind is the only thing that stayed young. When I asked my brother if I looked 27 years old already, he just asked me: "sa isip o sa itsura?" (in mind or body?) My brother believe I still think and acts immaturely for my age. Anyways, I still feel young and I am now enjoying a lot more freedom so that's the best thing that happened for me this year. I can now stay out very late with friends yay! :)

I spent my birthday working in the morning and watching Breaking Dawn Part 2 with my 11y/o cousin. My tita doesn't want to watch so she asked me if I can accompany Coleen in the movies since I am gonna watch it too. It was my first time going to Robinsons Magnolia and I enjoyed how clean it is. I just hope it is easier to commute from there.

Then, I had my favorite crispy pata for dinner. Yummy! That's my only request coz I really love eating that. Aside from the crispy pata, we also had Max's fried chicken which is also my family's favorite. I have been eating that since time immemorial haha :)

2. Lee Min Ho in Manila! (NOVEMBER 16)

Yep! The reason why I didn't had a birthday party is because I spent all my energy to meet Lee Min Ho at Araneta Coliseum! I went there super early and the line (for exchanging the invitations for the tickets) was already too long but everything was worth it. I was able to stand in front of the stage and I can clearly see him. I was, like, 6 rows from the stage! It's actually too hot there because everyone wants to go near so there were a lot of pushing going on. Luckily, we were able to stood our ground in the middle...I got training riding the MRT for a long time LOL.

The best part of this whole experience? I was able to enjoy this with my sister and my best friend so it was extra special :)

3. Bonding time with my special someone (NOVEMBER 17-18)

I spent the weekend with my bf because it's the only time we can go out and celebrate my birthday and our monthsary. We just spent it at home talking and playing with our dog. I'm lucky because both of us are home-body and we prefer to stay at home while watching a movie rather than going out. He cooked dinner for me and had ice cream. I also requested him to buy Vodka Ice so I can try it haha :)

4. Rescued 3 kittens (NOVEMBER 19)

I met with a client at QC Hall and on my way home, I found 3 abandoned kittens on the sidewalk. I'm worried that they might get hit by a car or something so I picked them up and brought them home. I know I can't keep them and I'm planning on bringing them to PAWS when I get to contact them. I have 3 cats already and I can't get more even if I want to because they will probably fight each other (my cats are a little territorial).

One of them is already a few weeks old (he's already walking and have his eyes open already) while the other 2 are newborns coz they still have umbilical cords (maybe 3-4 days old). So I'm really guessing they were thrown out by someone. 

I am used to getting puppies or kittens so I already have a feeding bottle at home and I used the nipple for newborns for them. I bought infant milk coz this have an approval seal from my veterinarian years ago for my puppies. I just add multivitamins to it so that it can help with their immune system as they probably have not had their mom's colostrum to help fight of illnesses.

I have them for 4 days now and the first 2 nights are a nightmare coz they wake me up every 2 hours to ask for milk. I felt sorry for my sister (we sleep in 1 bedroom) because she still need to go to work early in the morning and she can't sleep properly due to the crying. Luckily, last night was peaceful. I don't know what happened but I guess they were able to sleep throughout the night without getting hungry :)

I am really hoping that they can survive and grow into adults. All three of them have good sucking reflex and can drink lots of milk! They can also eliminate pretty well so I know they will not have problem in that area. I just hope PAWS can take care of them...I don't know how long I can foster for them since I also need to go to work so no one can feed them frequently. Please help me pray for these kittens.

So yeah, sorry if I can't post anything lately. I actually have no time to compose anything with all the things happening around me. Everyone and everything wants my attention so I got lost LOL. Hopefully I can come back into posting every other day once I delivered the kittens to PAWS and I have finished general cleaning the house (we have a lot of Japanese friends going here for a vacation) :)

I went to True Value to check out their doggy stuffs early this month and I saw that they have pet food on sale. I frequent True Value coz their items are a lot cheaper than pet shops and they have a wide variety too. After checking out the ingredients of each dog treats, I have settled on NutriPet Active Healthy Natural Soft Jerky in Sandwich Lamb and Cheese :)

As you can see in the logo, this is made by NutriPet which is a Korean brand that uses natural ingredients on their dog foods. I have bought at least 3 kinds of doggy treats from this brand and I posted a review on the first item I got from them (You can read my review here). I like buying from them because 1) they are made from natural ingredients and 2) they are very affordable.

Something personal...

Guys, please allow me to post this here. I'm just feeling down and I hope you won't mind if I let it all out here on the blog. If you're not comfortable reading about my personal feelings or if you don't like these kinds of posts, please feel free to close this window down now and just come back when I posted another beauty blog or something. I won't get angry, I promise :)

So here it goes...don't tell me I didn't warn you..

I had a very bad night and I woke up this morning feeling irritated. I thought everything will be alright once I talked about it with someone but it turned out that someone sees it differently and I'm the one who's wrong. Whatever way I think about it, I don't see wanting to give the best to my pets is a bad thing. Do you?

I just hate it when people who are not animal lovers try their best to put me down just because I care about my dogs and cats like they were my kids. Who will always pinpoint my mistakes on how I care about them. For example, is it really bad if I wanted to give my dog a shelter while it's raining? I know my dog has a good dog house that he can go stay in but because he don't want to go inside his house to sleep, he gets wet...So I just wanted to bring him inside the garage while it's raining and then bring him back out to his cage once it's sunny again. He had a distemper that reached neurologic stage last year and even if he survived it, there were times that he relapses especially if his immune system goes down so I'm very careful about him. Who can argue with a dog? They don't have human brains that rationalizes what we say...if they don't feel like doing something, they won't do it. It is then the responsibility of the owner to make sure he stays healthy and safe, right? We ask them to guard our house and protect us from harm and in return we should provide their needs and give them love and care.

I know I'm not perfect. I can't walk them everyday even though I know that I should. It's just impossible for me because of my schedule and my health, and lately it's raining frequently. So I wanted to balance it all out and give them healthy foods, clean water and a good shelter to keep them warm and dry. I am actually on the process of saving up so I can buy a treadmill before Christmas so they can run everyday. I saw it on The Dog Whisperer show that if the owner can't walk the dogs, they should have a treadmill where they can make the dogs walk any time of the day that they have time. I am really hoping I can save up the whole amount soon...the one I like is pricey because of the size (I have Labradors so it needs to be big) and it's digital.

I also hope that they'll stop saying I'm stupid just because I don't care if I spend all my hard earned money to buy dog/cat foods and keeps on bringing them to the veterinarian if they got sick or something. I don't get it.. It's my own money and I have the right to spend it for something that will make me happy and keeping my pets healthy is my priority. At least I don't spend it on useless things like alcoholic drinks and going on gimmicks every day. I don't think spending money to keep God's creation healthy is an idiotic thing to do. Personally, I think humans are created by God to take care of his creations and not abuse them.

I can't wait for the time when I get to leave and stay on my own house. I would have full authority on everything and no one will chastise me if I wanted to build a pretty dog house or something. I will definitely bring my pets with me coz I'm afraid that if I'm not here, they will die early because my family won't bring them to the veterinarian soon enough if they get sick. Don't get me wrong, I love my family unconditionally even if they all make me crazy sometimes. I just hope they would understand me much better and don't add to my problems.

I know it is common here in our country to see dogs as dogs and cats as cats but I am not like that. Whenever I look at my dogs and cats I see living things with souls who looks at me with complete trust and love in their eyes. And I wanted to give them the same unconditional trust and love that they give me.

I am hoping that everything will go according to my plan and I would be able to leave Philippines in the future and live in Canada with my future family where there are laws against animal cruelty and taking care of an animal is not just a chore but a long term responsibility. And nobody looking at me like I'm crazy coz I wanted to keep my dogs inside my house. There are also a lot of good veterinarian hospitals available so I would be able to give the best treatment possible to my pets if they get sick.

Personally, I don't think I'll miss so much here once I went. I don't have a lot of friends here coz a lot of them are already living abroad. I'm also a home body so I didn't get to socialize a lot. I also don't have many relatives that I like to be with (A lot of them are living abroad too). I'll miss my family but I can just send them tickets so they can go to me for a vacation. I'll probably miss all my pets that I will leave behind because I don't know if I can bring them all..which is the saddest part of this plan... I will definitely hire a househelp before I leave and all she needs to do is take care of my furkids...no more, no less. I might do that soon if ever I will need to move out because of my work. I won't be able to bring them with me if I'm staying in a boarding house :(

Pet Review: Nutripet Twistix Maxx in BBQ/Milk flavor

I just wanted to do a quick review on this denta snack for dogs from the brand NutriPet. Me and my bf got this from Dogs in the City  Trinoma branch early this month coz we are looking for a denta bone for Hershey to chew on. We first wanted to get the Pedigree one but they don't have it for small dogs so we just looked around the store for an alternative. This caught our eyes coz it is the perfect size and it comes in different flavors (we chose BBQ and milk). It is also quite affordable at Php150 only and it contains a lot of products inside ^_^

It is stated in the package that it helps in making the teeth and bones stronger and also reduces plaque and tartar build up.

The ingredients are:

I love the fact that everything here is digestible and there's no ingredients in it that can make it bad for your dog. The Guaranteed Analysis part is also appreciated especially if you are cautious on the amount of protein, fat, etc it contains.

The product looks like this:

I guess the dark brown is the BBQ flavor and the light brown is the milk. It really smells yummy and my dogs love to chew it ^_^

The size is comparable to a regular glue stick, around 2 inches long and the diameter is around the size of a 25 centavo coin.

It's the right size for puppies and small dogs coz they won't be able to swallow it accidentally..it happened to me before when I gave a treat to one of my pups and they swallowed it whole...I was so scared that they will choke and won't be able to breathe. This one fits perfectly on their small mouth and they can chew it leisurely.

RATING: I am giving this 4.5/5 coz my furbabies really loves them and they didn't have any adverse reaction to it.

I just lost one of my angels today....again

Have you ever blamed yourself for your pet's suffering? Well, that's what I'm feeling right now. I know it is not really me who caused their illnesses but I felt like I should have done something so that they don't suffer. If you have been following me on Facebook, I have posted that I am really down right now because another dog of mine died. 

90% of my dogs reaches their prime ages before dying...usually between age 8-13 years old and always due to illnesses. That means I was able to grew up with a lot of them and I have been taking care of them since I was a teenager. Except for our German Shepherd, Brando, who died at age 4 many years ago because he ate something and got poisoned when he accidentally got out of his cage and run wandered around our garage, majority of them reached their senior citizen year. 

One of my oldest, Onyok (he's an Aspin), who died early last year got diabetes due to old age (he was 14 years old) and when he got a wound on his front leg, it can't be healed anymore and he died of infection after some time. Until now, I still miss him...how he guards me when I go biking around the neighborhood and how he welcomes me home after school.

Another dog of mine who was a gift to me by mom when I was in elementary got a cancer on her left eye 2 years ago but she died just early last year (she was 13 years old when she passed away). Her name is Petite and she's a Shih Tzu. I loved her so much because she always have that smiling face and she is willing to be carried around and hugged.

Late last year, two of my old dogs also passed away due to old age..They are Mik-Mik (8 y/o) and Dumbo (6y/o). They are both Aspin and have a great immune system. Dumbo is actually Mik-Mik's first puppy and they are only 2 years apart in age. Both are very energetic and very sweet so I was actually sad that they went back to heaven with only a couple of months in between. I'm not sure if it's because Dumbo got sad that her mom died, but she lost appetite all of a sudden.

And today, I lost another one of my fur-babies. Her name is Glimpse and she's a black Labrador Retriever. She is 8 years old and she was diagnosed with a malignant breast cancer. I brought her to UP Veterinary Hospital and they told me that she has a very bad prognosis and even if we removed the tumor, there's no guarantee that she will recover.

I actually got 3 opinions from different veterinarians and I talked with my parents too. We have decided to put her down instead of making her undergo a risky operation. We actually planned to have it done last Saturday but when the veterinarian arrived at our place , I chickened out and cried. I begged my dad if we could at least try the surgery and see if she could still live a good life even if it's just for another year...But sadly my parents are adamant to just put her to sleep. They can't take seeing her in pain because one of her breast tumor already got ulcerated and also the price of the surgery is quite high and we can't really afford it at the moment. So I spent the whole day yesterday crying and rationalizing and what not.

The deciding factor is from my trusted veterinarian who is also a friend. I know he will tell me his opinion based on facts and won't be motivated with money or take my feeling into consideration. He explained that the breast cancer my dog had is really a bad one and it has a very very bad prognosis. And since it is malignant and ulcerated, it means there is a very high chance that the cancer had already spread to other organs so if we will have it removed surgically, the cancer is still there and Glimpse won't actually last even a year. Also, since she's already old, the surgery itself is risky and she can die on the operating table.

And I don't want her to suffer anymore. I don't want her to feel any more pain. So I decided to just toughen up because it is the best option for her...to just sleep and go back to our maker in heaven where there is no more pain and illnesses. 

We had the procedure done today and she looked so peaceful during the whole ordeal. I stayed beside her the whole time so I can take care of her body and hug her one last time. I have buried her at our backyard already but I am still crying until now. I can't seem to stop because I already miss her. 

 

I just wanted to post this up in memory of all my dogs that I love who are already back in heaven. I don't care what breed they are...I love them equally. I know that not a lot of people feels the same as me when it comes to their pets and won't understand what I feel but I don't care. I have loved them with all my heart and I will never forget them. I really hope that when it is my time to go to our maker in heaven, I would be able to be with them again. 

I will try to get back into posting regularly...It's just actually hard for me right now to think clearly. This is the first time I needed to decide for something that involves a life. I hope you guys understand.
